Welcome to IB!

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme is an academically challenging and balanced two-year programme of education, that prepares students for success in post-secondary education and in life beyond.  It is designed for highly-motivated Grade 11 and 12 students, who want an internationally-recognized and rigorous education. Please note, the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme will be phased out at CCI by June 2027.  Students currently in the program will be able to complete their diplomas but there will be no new students admitted into the program starting in the Fall of 2024.

Some benefits of the IB Diploma Programme include:

  • The IB Diploma Programme prepares students exceptionally well for post-secondary studies
  • Highly successful students may receive university credits for their IB subjects studied at CCI
  • IB Graduates have polished research skills, and demonstrate a capacity for in-depth and interdisciplinary study while maintaining a broad perspective informed by different subject areas.
  • IB Diploma holders have important intellectual advantages, and are ready to debate real world issues from an international perspective.
  • IB Graduates are curious, ask challenging questions, and know how to express their opinions eloquently, both orally and in writing.
  • IB Diploma Graduates provide the whole package that post-secondary institutions are interested in: strong academics blended with leadership and commitment to community.

How does a student earn the IB Diploma at Cobourg Collegiate Institute?

To prepare for the IB DIploma Programme, students first participate in the Prepartory Years Programme which consists of a set of workshops in Grade 9 and specialized courses in Grade 10.  The IB Diploma Programme is studied in Grades 11 and 12.  Students are encouraged to take the full programme, but can take individual Diploma Programme Courses if desired.  Students receive guidance and counselling to develop the programme that meets their needs and interests.

Preparatory Years Programme:  CCI offers a Preparatory Years Programme designed to prepare grade and 9 and 10 students for the Diploma Programme in Grade 11 and 12.  During the preparatory years students are introduced to the IB learner profile traits in Grade 9 through a series of monthly workshops.  In Grade 10 they receive enhanced curriculum (in English, French, Mathematics, Science, and History) that fosters critical thinking, and a strong sense of internationalism.  Additionally, students take other Grade 10 courses to fulfill their OSSD requirements.

Diploma Programme:  The Diploma Programme consists of six subjects - one from each group - studied over 2 years.  Three of the subjects are studied at the Higher Level, and three are studied at the Standard Level.  Additionally, Diploma students complete the three core requirements of Theory of Knowledge (TOK), Extended Essay (EE) and Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS).
